What most businesses miss when trying to transform
Organisational leaders often focus heavily on restructures and technology-based changes to drive results. Most failures to achieve desired benefits are attributed to poor change management or resistance on the part of others in the organisation.
These leadership teams usually overlook the importance of all the other things that are going on and that are impacting their plans to change the System; they overlook the impacts of their own, and others’ Mindsets, Behaviours, and Cultures.
Paying attention to, and doing something about these other dimensions is the critical missing piece of most organisational transformations:
Mindset:
- What are the levels of thinking and emotional intelligences being brought to bear on the business – are people in over their heads?
- Do we have the right capability?
- Are their blocks in me or others that are getting in the way of having the right conversations?
Behaviour:
- What interpersonal and professional behaviours are being displayed and either encouraged or discouraged?
- Are we working constructively and creatively with each other?
- Are we seeking to dominate, being critical, appeasing others or avoiding conflict?
Culture:
- Are we collaborating effectively and getting better quality decisions?
- Are we creating the stories and symbols that will inspire discretionary effort
- Have se set up interpersonal ways of working that foster connection, trust and enable truthful and tough conversations?

Combining evidence-based and leading-edge research and practices with decades of C4AT’s experience designing and guiding enterprise transformations, the ACI reveals the capabilities and hidden dynamics that determine executive team functioning and organisational performance.
The ACI provides an integrated and comprehensive view across 12 sub-dimensions critical to developing adaptive capacity.
What is the ACI?
The ACI is a survey-based instrument that reveals an organisation’s adaptive capacity, effectiveness, and capability for business transformation.
It is a systemic process that supports the executive team to understand if the organisation is fit for purpose now, and able to respond to new challenges as they arise.
It provides a solid executive platform for collective sense-making, perspective coordination, and strategic alignment.
It enables senior teams to have the right conversations, ones that may have been overlooked or avoided, to close gaps, and to make better decisions.
How does it work?
C4AT’s approach is grounded in theory, research, and our experience in guiding successful large-scale and longitudinal organisational transformations.
The executive team completes an on-line survey targeting twelve sub-dimensions of organisational effectiveness. A report integrates the team’s perspectives of their own organisational effectiveness.
The value is created in the collective debriefing and sense-making of the report. In this bespoke designed and guided discovery, the senior team progressively reveals where they believe they are strong, where they believe they are not, where they agree and where they have different perspectives.
In coordinating their beliefs, assumptions, and perspectives the lead team reveals what their problems and opportunities are, and what they need to do to address them
A three phase process delivers on-going value
1. Reveal
Online survey collects views about organisational capability.
2. Align
A series of sense-making sessions coordinates perspectives
3. Transform
Strategic decisions about development actions.
